on the road again

we said good bye and off we went. it feels a little different this time. last year we were "tourists" doing some volunteering. this year we became a rehoboth volunteer family. we did what they do...we took part of them with us and left a little of ourselves there. i wish i could take all of the sunshine! driving east on 40 we landed in shamrock, tx for the night. the drive went well. the kids were tired and slept. that gave me a chance to think about the past 3 weeks. education is a funny thing. in the traditional sense...it is very limited. i think most can agree that the "classroom" has no walls. again i thank the teachers at KC for making this so easy. everyone we met assumed we homeschooled and acted very perplexed when i said we just pulled them from class. "who are your kids parents?", i would ask. then reply..."the most important teacher they will ever have." (i never said the smartest) so that brings me to the family car trip. take one. i appreciate modern aviation but nothing beats the open american road. the colors of the landscapes, truck stops, dirty bathrooms, clare with a map in her lap. amarillo has 16 exits...and she was right. "i need a water bottle, give me the carmex, stop touching me, move over, i saw a junk store, get out and run, when are we gonna eat? turn up the radio". so when they were sleeping i thought about education. the native people we served and became friends with have a rich history and culture. what they lack is hope. the hope many natives carry is in a system that provides money but little else. entitlement programs don't work. not here. not anywhere. i think education is the tool and a christian education is the answer. i know Jesus Christ is the answer.."plans to give you a hope and a future...". the presence of the Holy Spirit is alive and active in rehoboth...we all felt it. it's funny because i thought i was the teacher but usually walk away a smarter student. i always did like school.
