blueberries
i talked to my dear college friend jill and she said, "you talk a lot about food." it is my dream job...a food reporter...traveling the country or the county and eating...then talking to anyone about it. i reminder jill i am in the KITCHEN longer her than i have been in my own in months. so the ingredient of the day was blueberries and ooh laa laa. they are good for you and they stain and they are running and my girls were with me...another "don't ask, don't tell". carly had a sinus headache and her eyes were running. i did set her on a chair in the kitchen and she tried hard to stay there. clare had not started her fever yet but was able to hang with the girls in the kitchen b/c the rest of her class was testing. i took an old recipe of karen's and "tweaked" it. recipes/rules are hard to follow for me b/c it involves so much math! and everythng here is doubled or tripled. so i started with my neighbor's blueberry bread recipe and we spread it into a larhe flat sheet and had the extra in muffin cups. keith kuiper was thrilled to bring some home to his wife...we passed it to men at coffee and when we ran out of white bread with the chicken soup...we passed out BB muffins. then i took a recipe karen gave me and substituted apples for blueberry crisp. carly and i had a real mess going on and i work a bit too fast in the kitchen b/c i know lunch is coming...so, blueberries stain you know. the recipe called for 7CUPS OF SUGAR! i couldn't do that with a clear concious so i spinkled a lite cup and half on each tray. the crumble is always the best anyway and we had that right b/c carly was eating it out of the bowl. i didn't anticipate the liquid when it bakes...the apple crisp recipe i modified called to add water. i shouldn't have. oh well...the volunteers enjoyed it anyway and i think kids will eat it today for dessert. this morning we have breakfast with some admin. people at EARL'S Restuarant in town. they take the volunteers out before they leave. we have plans to stay in a hogan tonight out in the wild....i'll let you know how that goes.
