2 hour delay

i have so much to say and i can't believe anyone really wants to read all of it but here goes...i was up last night b/c i forgot to mention we were stopped by border patrol friday morning (back road on the way to the bank). it was 8:15am and the road was blocked with a movable building with spot lights and cones and a very nice border patrol man. we stopped and he asked james, "are you and everyone in your car citizens of the united states of america?" keep in mind we are over 75 miles north of the border and it is 8:15am. of course i wanted to know more about this man and his job... like have coffee, take his picture, discuss the particulars of the border situation, etc...but he said no (with a smile). as we drove away i looked at james and said, "do you know what just happened?" and he did...we are tax payers, law abiding, family on a vacation in THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA...and legal citizens...it was the strangest thing. i don't think anyone living anywhere except along the border states have any idea what is really going on down here. i don't, but i don't want to be afraid for me and my family as we travel thru it. next: we started late today b/c many kids come from the reservations and they don't all have running water or heat so people need more time and the roads were slippery until some sun came out. i got clare, carly and jared to their classrooms...clare already decided she was going to stay the whole day, yeah! jared finished at noon and went to work with james and jimmy. they had a job they know how to do well - demolition and take down of an old building that they are going to remodel for more affordable teacher housing. carly and clare had so much fun that they stayed for the gov't funded after care program. it is cost effective to run the buses home once so most of the kids stay after school (up to 12 th grade and do homework, play, exercise, snack, etc.) some don't have electric at home anyway to do computer homework or they go to empty houses so most stay until parents are home at 6:30-7pm. That is a Long Day for kids! and the teachers that run the program. but is supplements their income. We ran out of lunch food so many had bread with samples of PBJ and raw carrots. i made 2 batches of chocolate chip cookie dough and will make the cookies tomorrow. i put the snack together for the after care program - apples and string cheese..over 140 kids. that's all for now.

  1. Hi Sarah and all the Dirksen Family!!
It was good catching up with you and your travels! Lots of great teaching moments going on in the traveling...stopping at banks and the like:-) Your are making great memories. Are you keeping a journal so that someday your kids can read all of your travels and experineces??

We returned from our week in Kalamazoo yesterday.
Had dry roads both going to MI and returning yesterday. All the kids made it safely back to their respective states. Cold and sunny in South Dakota. No wind today. It is great!!
Blessings to all of you. sincerely,
    Linda B.
