lunch conversation - thursday
darrel is another favorite navajo. the natives at lunch wanted to put the dirksens into a clan. clans are very important to the native americans. it identifies who they are, who they were, and if they like you. (no political correctness ~ sweet). so the conversation was fun. we can't be a zuni clan because we are too tall. they listed off others: wilderness, grasslands, red rocks, etc...so we are "the towering house" clan (because we are roofers). the navajo name for that is Kiyaa' aanii. clare has the word recorded. It is one of the original navajo clans...so i guessed we chose well! each person has 4 clans that they represent...we are just starting with one clan this year. one more day of working and then we play a day and then get on the train home. sometimes i feel like we need 2 weeks...it becomes really comfortable to be part of the clan, and then we have to leave.
