in the kitchen today...blood bread
the boys left for the shop at 8am (short walk). Deanna came to get us and we dropped Carly off at the PreK room. The teacher (well, everyone) remembers us...but we get bigger and older, and they do to. Carly will walk to cafeteria for lunch. Then we took Clare and Lee to the association office. Mindless, repetitive work...shredding paper, stuffing envelopes. the kind of stuff you hate to pay people to do! they seemed fine with it. I went to the kitchen. hugs. happy to be back. so here's my story in the kitchen for today: james' mom made 8 loaves of sweet bread for us to take on train. we ate most of it and i kept 2 date breads out to have for "men's coffee" this morning. ALL the bread went. Hattie (older Navajo in kitchen photo) tells me that it looks like blood bread that she bakes, a Navajo bread. well...i had to ask what blood bread is ~ here we go....i tried so hard to remember what she was saying and later scratched it down on a post it but i probably will mess it up. if you aren't Navajo, you won't know the difference. When they slaughter a sheep, they save the blood. the limbs that are cut off are laid out to dry. the next day, she mixes the blood with onions, garlic, other cut up veggies and meat from the limbs and lard. This is where i get lost in translation. They clean out the stomach/intestines of the sheep and stuff the mixture in it and bake. humm. that's the story for today from the kitchen. ok...so the food line went well and lee ditched the office job for real work. the boys painted the rail at the post office on campus and i took Lee's job. awesome weather. still need to get some exams done and sent back.
